*Shedding light on cystoscopes*

Ever wondered what the difference is between rigid and flexible cystoscopes? Although, I’d heard of both, I wasn’t entirely sure which one I’d always had. It’s never comfortable but it wasn’t until August last year that it had been really painful. That alarmed me and I put it down to the bright-red-inflammation in my bladder at the time.

My urologist retired recently– naturally I was happy for him – but we’d been through a lot together, 28 cystoscopies, 5 of which showed tumours. He was sympathetic and would be a hard act to follow. In April I had my first check up with my new urologist. Fortunately, I’ve known him for several years as he used to work in the hospital I’ve been to many, many times for operations and treatment.

I was nervous as usual beforehand – despite calming meditations and yoga it remains a nerve wracking procedure. You just never know what you’ll see once you’re in there!

I was relieved that there weren’t any tumours and that the redness and inflammation had lessened. He used a flexible scope and it didn’t hurt and it was quick.

I asked about the difference in scopes wanting to shed some light on the subject. He said he was a fan of the flexible ones and always used them whereas some colleagues used a rigid one for women and a flexible one for men. He said it was force of habit what you’re used to using and added that the flexible scopes are slimmer and therefore less intrusive.

I’ve done some research and it seems the rigid ones are used for biopsies and operations and flexible ones more for the regular outpatient checkups.

Despite the 3 months rolling around incredibly quickly at least I’m not worried about the pain anymore – just the outcome! Next one 8 July, fingers crossed.

Hast du dich jemals gefragt, was der Unterschied zwischen starren und flexiblen Zystoskopen ist? Obwohl ich schon von beiden gehört hatte, war ich mir nicht ganz sicher, welches ich immer hatte. Bequem ist es nie, aber erst im August letzten Jahres war es wirklich schmerzhaft geworden. Das beunruhigte mich, und ich führte es auf die hellrote Entzündung in meiner Blase zurück.

Mein Urologe ist vor kurzem in den Ruhestand gegangen – was mich natürlich sehr gefreut hat -, aber wir haben schon viel zusammen erlebt, 28 Blasenspiegelungen, von denen 5 Tumore ergeben haben. Er war mir sehr sympathisch, und es würde schwer sein, ihm zu folgen. Im April hatte ich meinen ersten Kontrolltermin bei meinem neuen Urologen. Glücklicherweise kenne ich ihn schon seit mehreren Jahren, denn er arbeitete in dem Krankenhaus , in dem ich schon viele, viele Male operiert und behandelt wurde.

Im Vorfeld war ich wie immer nervös – trotz beruhigender Meditationen und Yoga bleibt es eine nervenaufreibende Prozedur. Man weiß einfach nie, was einen erwartet, wenn man erst einmal drinnen ist!

Ich war erleichtert, dass keine Tumore zu sehen waren und dass die Rötung und Entzündung zurückgegangen war. Er benutzte ein flexibles Zystoskop, das nicht wehtat und schnell ging.

Ich erkundigte mich nach den Unterschieden bei den Zystoskopen, um etwas Licht in die Sache zu bringen. Er sagte, er sei ein Fan der flexiblen Zysto und benutze sie immer, während einige Kollegen einen starren Zysto für Frauen und einen flexiblen Zysto für Männer benutzten. Er sagte, es sei eine Frage der Gewohnheit, was man benutze, und fügte hinzu, dass die flexiblen Zielfernrohre schlanker und daher weniger aufdringlich seien.

Ich habe ein wenig recherchiert, und es scheint, dass die starren Instrumente für Biopsien und Operationen verwendet werden und die flexiblen eher für die regelmäßigen ambulanten Untersuchungen.

Obwohl die 3 Monate unglaublich schnell vergehen, mache ich mir zumindest keine Sorgen mehr über die Schmerzen – nur noch über das Ergebnis! Der nächste Termin ist am 8. Juli, ich drücke die Daumen.
